Ivan was another one of those "surprises" for us. When visiting his breeder to try and make a decision between Sola and another Silken bitch (who happened to be Ivan's sister), I was surprised to see Ivan still in residence as I had thought he was going to Sweden.
In July 2002 we took the Silkens to a rare breeds show in Hutto, TX. Ivan earned 11 points towards his Rarities American Championship in a total of 5 shows. He also won BEST IN SHOW and a Reserve Best in Show that weekend! It was wonderful to be able to not only get them out there for people to see, but to be honored with the ultimate award - and to also hear the other people in attendance remark about what a lovely breed this is. They are SO right!
Ivan has a very loving temperament and is just the sweetest boy. He was bred to Josi in late 2002 and their litter was born in February 2003. From that litter, Tyler and Ginger (both ISWS, Rarities and IABCA Champions) remain here. This litter was repeated in 2004, producing 3 lovely pups: Brewer, Ember and Kandi. Ember moved to Washington (Tangaloor Silkens) in 2005 (after winning Best Puppy in show at Silkenfest 2005) and Brewer and Kandi grew up here at Gryffyn's Aeyrie. with Brewer then heading to Scirocco Hounds in CA and Kandi remaining with us. Ivan is also the sire of the E-litter, out of Jett.
In May 2005, Ivan suffered a horrible injury. We are unsure of how he managed it, but he broke his lower jaw completely in half, in the process losing a premolar and splitting another tooth in half. After extensive surgery and a long recuperation, he has healed, although the missing teeth (and possible future loss of some of his canines) may preclude him from future showing and the possible acquisition of his ISWS Championship. In the meantime, he remains a wonderful companion and we delight in his presence daily, as well as that of his children and grandchildren that remain with us.
Ivan and 3 of his kids (Tyler, VooDoo and Kandi) showing in the inaugural Stud Dog class at Silkenfest 2009. Ivan won!
